17 Listens and Counting

My favorite, every  year. Despite: cheesy, 1986, bad hair bleach, worse fashions.

Just, George. Then and always

I count every year how many times I hear it. No cheating, no inferior cover versions, no seeking it out. Just on the radio, in stores, etc. Usually works out to about once a day in the month of December .. last year I landed exactly on 25 on Christmas Day. A cheap thrill and tiny fun little game for a busy, sometimes stressful season.

Today I stand at 17 listens – three behind! Five days to go …

“How Can I Keep From Singing?”

My life goes on in endless song
Above earth’s lamentations,
I hear the real, though far-off hymn
That hails a new creation.

Through all the tumult and the strife
I hear its music ringing,
It sounds an echo in my soul.
How can I keep from singing?

While though the tempest loudly roars,
I hear the truth, it liveth.
And though the darkness ’round me close,
Songs in the night it giveth.

No storm can shake my inmost calm,
While to that rock I’m clinging.
Since love is lord of heaven and earth
How can I keep from singing?
When tyrants tremble in their fear
And hear their death knell ringing,
When friends rejoice both far and near
How can I keep from singing?

In prison cell and dungeon vile
Our thoughts to them are winging,
When friends by shame are undefiled
How can I keep from singing?

By Gilbert and Sullivan

Tiny, snow-covered audience
All cast, orchestra, & crew not yet here
For a 2 p.m. show
Winter storm 12-11-16
Rages outside
But in here, we’re bonus musicked
Safe, happy, and warm
Two young guys tuxedoed
Playing the upright keys
And singing ala carte
Standup comedy on the fly
And we wile away 40 minutes and many moments
In a bubble of musical delight
As outside, this snowy December Sunday
Quietly inches by.
